NCE Passing Standard Update
As part of our commitment to ensuring provider competency, NBCRNA will be updating the passing standard for the National Certification Examination (NCE). This change will take effect for all exams administered on or after July 1, 2026. This is part of NBCRNA’s routine review cycle to make sure the exam reflects what is expected for safe, entry-level practice.
What is changing:
- The passing standard (minimum score required to pass) will be adjusted July 1, 2026, to better reflect current professional knowledge and competencies.
- Exam content and format will remain the same. View the current content outline here.
Why this change is happening:
- To ensure that individuals who pass the NCE possess the essential knowledge, skills, and abilities required for entry-level nurse anesthesia practice.
- To maintain the credibility and value of the examination.
- To align with the latest industry standards and expectations.
How is the Passing Standard Determined?
The passing standard is set through a well-established process called Standard Setting, where a diverse group of subject matter experts reviews the knowledge and skills needed for safe and competent practice. Using evidence-based methods, they recommend the minimum score that reflects entry-level competence for certification. The standard setting process ensures that only qualified individuals enter the profession, supporting patient safety and public protection.
