Scott Shaffer,

DNAP, CRNA

CRNA since:  1995

Why are you interested in serving on the NBCRNA Board of Directors?

I have spent my entire 30-year career advocating for CRNA practice. As I have grown in this profession, I have progressed from a CRNA only focused on the day-to-day practice of nurse anesthesia to considering the future of nurse anesthesia. Students are the future of our profession. I started working with students at the clinical level and have progressed to working with students on both the clinical and didactic levels. My history of operating anesthesia businesses, owning and working in CRNA only practices, my service on multiple committees, both at the state and national level, makes me uniquely qualified to serve on the NBCRNA board as a Certificant Elected Director.

Describe your qualifications and experiences in leadership.

As a retired Navy Nurse Corps Officer, I have the history of leading CRNA teams in multiple hospital environments including hostile and remote areas. I have built and maintained anesthesia contracts with multiple facilities. I work well with hospital leadership and operating room staff to foster and build these relationships. I have served as a state president with the AANA and the chair of the CRNAPAC committee. I also have direct service with the NBCRNA for the last 4 years on CPCA item writing, rationale writing, and NCE item writing committees. My current work experience requires supervision of 200 clinical students across 50 clinical sites in 9 states.

Describe your current employment, including major clinical, teaching, or practice areas; field/place of employment; and responsibilities.

I am currently employed full time as an assistant professor with Texas Wesleyan University Graduate Program of Nurse Anesthesia. I also serve as the Director of Clinical Education for 200 Resident Registered Nurse Anesthetists. My teaching responsibilities include business of anesthesia, personal finance, evidence-based practice, and doctoral scholarly work. I practice approximately one day a week at a level one trauma center, which happens to be one of our clinical sites.
